Hayzzzz… The culprit? Christmas season!

It’s really not so easy to resist all those yummy foods served at the table during the holiday season!

I swore that this year will be a healthier one, not just for me but for the whole family. I am planning to buy some exercise machines that I can use at home as I really have no chance to go to the gym regularly. I really want to buy that body slender and treadmills. This way, I can keep myself fit, and those bulging ‘whatever’ on my hips will just go away!

It will be the first time for the kids to spend summer here in the Philippines. And since it’s one of those first’s, I want it to be so memorable! If only we could afford to go to a luxurious resort just like the Outer Banks rentals… But never mind. I know the kids will have lots of fun wherever we intend to go as long as they are with their friends and cousins.

I am also planning to enroll them in swimming lessons. I do not want them to be like their Mame who does not know how to swim. Char!

pains of a pseudo mom http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2010/01/pains-of-a-pseudo-mom.html http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2010/01/pains-of-a-pseudo-mom.html#comments Sat, 02 Jan 2010 17:34:09 +0000 http://www.mommysjoyride.com/?p=241 What did the whole story teach me? Life can be that short. It is wise to get life insurance… the sooner, the better.

I remember teaching this song to my last year’s Grade 1 pupils. I alloted one whole day just for the children to learn and master this song. When my subject coordinator checked my lesson plan, she was surprised to see that the only thing we would be doing in the entire period was to sing that song. I just said I wanted the kids to master the song and have fun. (but the greater reason is I wasn’t in the mood of teaching. I was so tired.)

I didn’t know why this song struck me so much that I wanted my pupils to learn this by heart.

There’s a world of laughter, a world of tears

There’s a world of hopes and a world of fears

There’s so much we can share

That it’s time we’re aware

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small, small world.

But now, everytime I hear this song, one name comes to mind.

Teresa Roma.

In my second year of teaching in MCS, I had a tutee who was in Grade 5 level. His name was Gabriel whom I was fond of calling Gabo. This boy always reminded me of Gabby Concepcion. He was very handsome.

Days before the exams, Gabo’s mom would always come to me and ask if I could also make a reviewer for her daughter in pre-school. Thinking of the many things still left undone (test papers to check, grading sheets, visual aids, lesson plans, reviewers of my tutees who belonged to 3 different levels), I hesitated at first. But this mom would beg because her child got low marks in the first grading. And she didn’t know how to teach her, especially in English.

The next school year, I’ve found out that Gabo’s sister (whom I made the reviewers for) happened to belong to my class. She was happy. I was quite happy for reasons I didn’t understand.

I was expecting Gabo’s sister to look like him or, at least, to have a little resemblance. So when I entered the room, I was searching for a girl to have the same features with Gabo. I couldn’t find one. I started calling each pupil in my class list. Each one stood up after hearing their names. Most of them were smiling. But I remember Teresa, she stood up smiling but with her head down. Honestly, I was a little surprised to see her. She didn’t look like Gabo. I couldn’t see any similarity. Nobody would suspect they were siblings.

Teresa was a shy girl. She wouldn’t volunteer herself to answer my questions though everyone in the class was already raising their hands. But I could see in her face she knew the answer. During recess time, I would see her roaming around the room to talk to some of her classmates. When she wanted to share her food with me, she would ask a classmate to give it to me. I’d just look at her and say “Thank you.” She would just flash that timid smile and bow her head. I decided to move her to the first row for her to feel more comfortable with her teachers.

She was an average student. She didn’t stand out in the class. She was quiet. When she was done with her seatworks, I would see her drawing on a piece of paper. I remember commenting, “Mas magaling ka sa kuya mo mag-draw.(You draw better than your brother does.) ” I saw her face lit up and her big, beautiful eyes sparkled. Her lovely dimples were exposed.

During Christmas party, Valentine’s day, Teachers’ day, teachers in MCS would bring home large garbage bags full of gifts from their pupils. Of course, the most generous pupils (and parents) are in the lower grades so I also experienced having so many gifts and food to take home after parties. A little secret out in the open. I would recycle some of the gifts I didn’t like and need. And one of those gifts recycled was from Teresa. It was a glass rose figurine which I gave to one of my tita’s (I just couldn’t recall who).

My pupils and I ended the school year with a small party. Again, they brought many food for everyone to share and some gifts for their teachers. Some of the pupils danced, some sang in groups. And of course, we never forgot to sing the theme song of our class. When they were singing the song, I told myself, “It really is a small world. And someday our paths would cross again.”

Before the party ended, I gave each of them special awards (like Most Helpful, Most Cheerful, Friendliest and other adjectives I could associate with them). I couldn’t think of adjectives that would suit the naughty pupils in my class. But I still gave them awards hoping that this would motivate them to live up to that kind of character.

Teresa got the Most Behaved award. And she truly deserved it. She wasn’t really quiet in class. She just knew when to listen, when to talk, when to stand up, when to throw her trash, when to write, and practically, when to do all things. I admired that.

I gave up my job to focus on taking care of my own kids. It was sad leaving the friends I’ve gained and the pupils whom I’ve dearly loved.

I went on with my life…

Marc celebrated his first birthday. I personally took care of every detail of his party. It was so hard because Dave was already in Bahrain. It was even harder because weeks before Marc’s birthday, he had urticaria (tagulabay), and I had to bring him to the doctor every week and make sure that he took his medicines.

Then, after a month, I gave birth to my second son, Matthew, in my husband’s hometown.

A couple of months after giving birth, a friend from the school texted me, “Cel, did Teresa Roma belong in your last year’s class?”

To which I replied, “Yes, why?”

And to my surprise, “She’s already gone Appendicitis.”

I cried a river after that. I really felt so sad. I felt like I also lost a child.

My friends also relayed to me some stories Teresa’s mom told them when they went to the wake. She told them she didn’t have enough money when Teresa was brought to the hospital. The money she had was just sufficient to buy the medicines. So when her daughter passed away, she just borrowed money from some relatives to get her daughter out of the hospital. At ang saklap talaga, her money was robbed from her.

Teresa’s mom also shared that her daughter had some premonitions about her death. She printed a lot of pictures of herself and pasted them on their walls. She also gave her toys, even her favorite ones, to her cousins.

When I went home to Marikina, I wanted so much to visit her in Loyola. But I didn’t have the chance.

I would always remember Teresa’s sweet smile, boyish ways and shy gestures. I regret giving away her gift for me.

It’s sad when the school year ends but since this is a small world, chances are we will see each other again.

But it’s more painful to think that you will never see a pupil whom you cared for like your own child.

forming friendships http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/forming-friendships.html http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/forming-friendships.html#comments Sat, 26 Dec 2009 19:45:25 +0000 http://www.mommysjoyride.com/?p=239 I love meeting new friends. I love reaching out to other people especially those who need someone to listen to them when they are in the mood of talking. I love building lasting friendships.

In my 27 years of life, I’ve gained so many friends and buddies from our neighborhood, school, and other places. I’ve even met some true friends through chance encounters. And till now, though I’m not leaving home, I still meet some people with some interesting stories to share.

I have also met some people through the internet who share the same passion, blogging that is. I am amazed on how our friendships evolved into something worth cherishing. I have already asked about travel insurance online for I do have plans of visiting new found friends from other parts of the globe. I hope fate will let this happen.

I tried to wake up though I’m feeling down and sluggish. I’m having a sore throat. I think I’ve already caught the virus since my kids have been sick with cough and colds for almost a week now. It’s starting to feel cold here.

I have tons of work to do. I was supposed to iron the clothes last night. But I wasn’t able to do it since I was feeling kinda weak. Hayz, moms really need to be in full battle gear all the time just like the equestrians on their breeches everytime they are in action!

I’ll be going back to bed now. I hope I’ll get better when I wake up.

I still have to prepare breakfast early in the morning.

Ok, I’ll go back to bed now.

Till my next post!

friendship is the best http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/friendship-is-the-best.html http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/friendship-is-the-best.html#comments Fri, 11 Dec 2009 06:39:29 +0000 http://www.mommysjoyride.com/?p=232 That was what davey boy was always saying whenever we were kidding about cutting classes and going somewhere else rather than attending classes. I can say, that certain point in my life, college days, was one of the most colorful chapters of my life.

Being a memory collector that I am, I have bunched up a lot of recollections of college days and all the friends and acquaintances that I have come across in that particular spot in Diliman, QC. Memories so vivid that I could actually relay every detail. They all seem so fresh that they can still enliven a very dull day… “mummy returns” in SM north and the “haunted house” in Paskong Pasiklab horror challenge, Tagaytay getaway, sleepless overnights, pampanga eskapo… many things!

Hay, getting so schmaltzy again. Char! I am so grateful to have found some friends who unconditionally love me even if I do not have to buy Lipofuze.

We may not be able to bring those times back. We may be threading on different grounds right now. The friendship established may be a thing of the past, but personally, I have learned a lot from them and I truly cherish what it has caused to my whole being.

LSAT prep http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/lsat-prep.html http://www.mommysjoyride.com/2009/12/lsat-prep.html#comments Fri, 11 Dec 2009 06:35:53 +0000 http://www.mommysjoyride.com/?p=230 I can still vividly recall our high school days when my classmates and I were still dreaming about our future. Of course, we all wanted to be somebody someday. But each of us had our own definition of SUCCESS. Some friends were telling that it cannot be measured by wealth or fame. But one friend was insisting that he had his own standards when it comes to this issue.

10 years after, we decided to see each other and catch up with the lost times. And that one friend I was previously talking about proudly announced that he enrolled in LSAT prep class. We were all shocked upon learning that that bully-bully friend that we had back then also have his serious side, too.

Well, I hope that everything will turn out well for him.

Why? Because I have developed this credit card phobia after hearing about a friend who accumulated so much debt because of credit card mismanagement after their orlando vacations last summer.

I think when you have that plastic chip, you have to make sure that you have a firm control on yourself. You have to make it a point that every purchase is necessary. If not, you will surely get yourself in trouble.

Though there are some services offering some help for your debt settlement. Debt Expert USA can make your life a little stress-free by helping you out with your debt problems.
